For the first time in 64 years, the Los Angeles Dodgers have a record that is 50 games over .500 at 84-34. The last time was during the 1953 season when the Dodgers had a team of Hall of Famers.
That season eventual Hall of Fame members included Roy Campanella at catcher, Pee Wee Reese at shortstop, Jackie Robinson in left field, Duke Snider in center field and Red Barber and Vin Scully in the broadcast booth.
They were the finest group of players Brooklyn has seen on one team, immortalized by Roger Kahn the author of Boys of Summer. Possibly the 2017 Los Angeles version of the Dodgers will one day be immortalized with a timeless nickname of their own.
However, at this point today’s Dodgers are equal in the overall standings with the Boys of Summer, as they reached 50 games over .500 for just the first time since 1953.
Justin Turner the Dodgers’ talented hitter said the team was not focusing on going 60, 70 or more games over .500, adding that they wont to figure out what they need to do to win this year’s World Series.
Los Angeles took one more step toward that direction on Tuesday breaking a tie with five runs in the eighth inning after two were out to defeat the Chicago White Sox.
Los Angeles has dominated so much this season they have won 84 games with over six weeks remaining in the regular season. Two teams in the National League qualified for the postseason last year with 87 wins.
The Dodgers are still on pace to finish with 115 wins, just one shy of the record for the majors. The team has won 49 of its past 57 games, and became the first team in the majors in the past 105 years to do that. At home, the Dodgers are almost unbeatable going 29-4 in their past 33 games at Dodger Stadium
On Wednesday, the Dodgers will continue their trek toward the record books and a World Series sending newly acquired Yu Darvish to the mound for his debut at Dodger Stadium.
Yasiel Puig the Dodgers outfielder laughed about playing for a major league team that won every game. He said that at one time he played for a team that lost 58 games out of the 60 it played, but has never been on one that has won as much as this year’s Dodgers have and are expected to continue doing.
