Angels News – Ryan Madson Agrees To One-Year Deal – Greinke Not Likely

Angels news

Madson went 4-2 and had 32 saves in 34 chances as the Philadelphia Phillies’ closer in 2011

Pending a physical free-agent reliever Ryan Madson has reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Angels on a one-year contract. Madson, 32, went 47-30 with a 3.59 ERA and 52 saves in eight seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and went 4-2 with a 2.37 earned run average and 32 saves in 34 chances as the Philadelphia Phillies’ closer in 2011. It was reported earlier in the day that the Angels and Madson were close to an agreement.

Madson signed a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Reds in January of 2012 but suffered an elbow injury during the spring and missed the entire season.

Madson is coming off Tommy John elbow surgery. Madson is likely to assume the role of the Angels closer, and Ernesto Frieri, would become the Angels set up man. Terms of the deal were not announced, however Madson will not likely be ready for the start of the 2013 season, and the Angels may have found themselves a bargain.

His contract is expected to include a relatively low base salary with incentives that would increase his pay for games finished.

CBS Sports’ Danny Knobler reports that the Angels are unlikely to re-sign free agent Zack Greinke. Greinke him is said to be seeking a big contract, something the Angels are apparently not willing to provide. The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Texas Rangers do remain interested.
