Javier Vazquez Drawing Interest From Multiple MLB Teams

MLB News

Vazquez has reportedly been touching 92 to 93 MPH with his fastball

Javier Vazquez, 36, last pitched in the big leagues in 2011, when he went 13-11 with a 3.69 ERA in 192 2/3 innings for the then Florida Marlins.

Over a 14-year career, Vazquez went 165-160 with a 4.22 ERA and that combined with a strong showing with Caguas of the Puerto Rican Winter League has piqued the interest of several major league teams, including the Boston Red Sox and the Washington Nationals.

Vazquez is attempting a comeback and will pitch in a workout for several MLB teams on Friday.

The Nationals feature a rotation that is comprised of Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmermann, Ross Detwiler and Dan Haren and would seek to add Vazquez on a minor-league deal as insurance for one of the five starters suffering an injury.

It is not known whether Vazquez would accept a minor league deal.

Boston’s rotation features Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz and and the newly signed Ryan Dempster.

Presumably Vazquez would compete with John Lackey and Felix Doubront for a spot in the Red Sox rotation, and fits in with the plan GM Ben Cherrington has adopted this off-season of signing shorter-term deals with veterans without draft pick compensation.

Vazquez has reportedly been touching 92 to 93 MPH with his fastball, and looks great physically.
