One of the most reliable arms in what has mostly been a shaky Red Sox starting rotation, 24-year-old left-hander Felix Doubront was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 10. He is the 26th Red Sox player to land on the DL in 2012.
Doubront has not started since August 9. Boston opted to give him a breather after he served up nine runs in nine innings over his last two outings. Overall, the promising southpaw from Venezuela is 10-6 with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP in 22 starts and 122.2 innings. He was 9-4 with a 4.41 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP in 17 starts before the All-Star break. Since that point, he is 1-2 with a 5.74 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP in five starts.
This is Doubront’s first full season in the majors, so the Red Sox are closely monitoring his workload. The most innings he has thrown in his professional career, all of which has been spent in the Boston organization, is 129 between two Single-A affiliates in 2008.
If he is ready, Doubront will rejoin the Red Sox rotation for an August 25 start against Kansas City at Fenway Park.
To replace Doubront on the active roster, Boston recalled first baseman/DH Mauro Gomez from Triple-A Pawtucket. The 27-year-old slugger hit .300 (9-for-30) in a nine-game stint with the Red Sox earlier this season. At Pawtucket, he posted a .310 average with 24 home runs, 74 RBI, a .589 slugging percentage and a .960 OPS in 370 at-bats.
The right-handed hitting Gomez could see time at DH with David Ortiz still sidelined with an Achilles heel injury. Since Boston has faded from playoff contention, it is uncertain if Ortiz will return this year.
