Doubront is 10-6 with a 4.70 ERA over 22 starts and 122.2 innings in his first full Major League season
Felix Doubront isn’t going anywhere. Chances are, Andrew Miller isn’t either. Aaron Cook; however, could be joining another Major League starting rotation before the August 31 deadline.
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Boston Red Sox have placed Doubront, Miller and Cook on trade waivers.
If a team claims a player placed on trade waivers, it can pull that player back, release him to the team that is awarded the claim or work out a trade with that club. It is common for teams to place players on trade waivers this time of year and pull them back. They typically do so to gauge interest from other clubs for potential off-season deals.
The 27-year-old Miller, who was the sixth overall pick by Detroit in the 2006 draft out of the University of North Carolina, has emerged as a reliable reliever in 2012. The power left-hander is 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. In 30 innings, he has 34 strikeouts and 10 walks, numbers that represent a marked improvement over his career 5.57 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over parts of seven Major League seasons.
Since the Red Sox have bullpen depth at the Major League and Triple-A levels, Miller could be expendable, but since he can retire hitters from both sides of the plate, he is an asset Boston can use next season. The team also has left-handed reliever Rich Hill, who is rehabbing in the minors, and the recently acquired lefty Craig Breslow. Franklin Morales, a 26-year-old left-hander who spent time in the bullpen this season, has been moved to the rotation.
As for Cook, the 33-year-old sinkerballer could interest a contender. He is signed to an affordable one-year deal and does not appear to be part of Boston’s 2013 plans. The right-hander is 3-6 with a 4.58 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 10 starts. When his sinker is working, Cook induces a lot of grounders and pitches deep into games.
