The Washington Nationals acquired veteran infielder Cesar Izturis from the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Nationals are looking for infield depth with injuries to Mark DeRosa and All-Star shortstop Ian Desmond.
Desmond is not expected to return to the team until late August or early September, and DeRosa has a groin injury that could eventually landed him on the DL
The 32-year-old Izturis is batting .235/.248/.333 this season with the Brewers. Izturis cleared waivers and was eligible for a trade.
Izturis will be a free agent after this season and is owed less than $350,000 of his $875,000 contract that he signed with the Brewers this past December.
Terms of the trade have not yet been disclosed.
The Nationals will have to clear a spot on the 40 man roster to accommodate the acquisition of Izturis.
Update : The Nats designated left-hander Atahualpa Severino for assignment to make room for Izturis
