Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus saw slugger Miguel Cabrera leave last night’s game with a left calf strain suffered while running the bases and knew it was not going to be good news after the game. He was right. The Tigers placed the veteran Cabrera on the 15 day DL, marking the first time he has ever been on the disabled list in his career according to MLB.com
”I’m not optimistic at all,” Ausmus said afterwards. ”When Miggy says he can’t play, it is serious, because Miggy plays through everything.”
The 32-year-old Cabrera came into Friday’s game hitting .345/.453/.575 (184 OPS+) with 15 home runs and 53 RBI.
Since his first full season in the majors in 2004, no one in baseball has appeared in more games than Cabrera. From 2004 to ’14, he averaged 157 games per season and played fewer than 157 games once — 2013 (148 games).
