The Baltimore Orioles have designated catcher and former Boston Red Sox prospect Ryan Lavarnway for assignment, a move necessitated to make space on the 40 man roster after the team signed Delmon Young to a new one-year deal. The team also signed catcher J.P. Arencibia to a minor-league deal.
Lavarnway, 27, spent seven years in the Red Sox system and has posted impressive numbers in the minor leagues but has never been able to maintain those numbers at the major-league level. In 301 plate appearances at the major-league level, Lavarnway has posted a slash line of .201/.249/.315 with five home runs and 34 RBI.
Lavarnway isn’t expected to be out of work long as there are a number of teams looking to shore up their rosters at catcher.
