The Toronto Blue Jays have reached an agreement with catcher Dioner Navarro on a two-year deal worth $8 million. The deal is pending a physical according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
Navarro had one of his best seasons in 2013 hitting a career-high 13 home runs while batting .300/.365/492 in 89 games in a backup role with the Cubs.
Navarro played five seasons with the Rays, where he was an All-Star in 2008, and he also has been with the Yankees, Dodgers and Reds. the addition of Navarro gives the Blue Jays for catchers on their 40 man roster potentially giving them an opportunity to trade incumbent J.P. Arencibia.
Blue Jays News and Rumors
Rumors continue to circulate that the Blue Jays are putting together packages of young players to offer the Chicago Cubs for starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija. Recently Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos spoke to those rumors
“I’m going to try to be a little more candid than I may have been in the past,” Anthopoulos said. “I won’t comment on specific rumors and things like that, but I will say that we’re definitely exploring starters with teams. But also, just like a lot of stuff that’s out there that is false, we have not made an offer to anybody with respect to a starter.
“So, if there is something out there that we’ve actually made an offer to someone for a starter, that is not accurate. It doesn’t mean we’re not inquiring.”
