Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis reached the 50-home run to lead a comeback win over the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3, snapping a three-game losing streak. Baltimore at (78-60) remains 2 1/2 games back of Tampa Bay for the second Wild Card spot. “Some guys hit some cheapies here. He doesn’t get any cheapies,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of Davis, who is the first player to hit 50 homers since Toronto’s Jose Bautista in 2010.
“We’ve really battled the last couple of days,” Davis added. “I think we had a couple of games where we were in them and we weren’t able to seal the deal, but tonight, it was big to come from behind and get the win.”
The Orioles win marked the beginning of a crucial three-city, 10-game divisional road trip. The Orioles, who had lost four of their previous five, gained ground on the New York Yankees, who lost 8-4 at Boston.
Adam Lind hit a two-run home run and Colby Rasmus returned from the disabled list with a solo shot, but the Blue Jays suffered their fourth straight defeat. Toronto starter Todd Redmond allowed one run and three hits in a career-high 6 1-3 innings. He walked none and struck out seven.
