Michael Wacha, the 19th overall pick just one summer ago, may be on his way to the majors to fill in for injured Cardinals’ pitchers. Jake Westbrook, Jaime Garcia, and most recently, John Gast, have all hit the DL as Cardinals’ starting pitchers this season. The prospect’s debut should be this Thursday, with a turn in the rotation currently empty.
Fantasy Play: Pick Wacha up, immediately, in all formats. For a pitching and prospect rich organization, Wacha is widely considered the best of all the starting pitchers in the system. A 1.71 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 74/19 K to BB ratio in 73.2 innings in the minors this season backs those projections up whole-heartedly. Wacha is probably the best starting pitcher called up from the minors so far this season and will get the chance to pitch for a surging contender and with an elite offense. This one is a no-brainer.
