Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Patrick Corbin made just enough good pitches to battle through six innings to beat the San Diego Padres 6-5. Corbin got help from the Arizona offense when Eric Chavez homered for the second straight game, Martin Prado matched a career high with four of Arizona’s 11 hits.
Corbin also helped his own cause with a run-scoring single in the fifth inning. Heath Bell closed out the win with his eighth save of the season pitching a perfect ninth inning.
After a dominating performance in his last start against the Rockies, Corbin needed 105 pitches to get through six innings giving up three earned runs and seven hits while striking out five.
”The thing about Patrick is he kept his composure,” Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. ”This was a total contrast to the last game he pitched and he kept grinding it out. Corbin became the first Arizona left-hander to start the season with eight straight wins.
Carlos Quentin hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and Kyle blanks had two RBI for the Padres. ”I just wanted to try to keep us in the game,” Corbin said. ”We did a good job scoring early, putting us ahead and I just wanted to keep it.”
