David Adams has been called up to provide depth to a banged up Yankees’ infield. No corresponding move has been announced yet, but it’s likely to be either Ben Francisco or Chris Nelson. Adams is expected to enter the lineup on Wednesday.
Adams is hitting .325/.411/.494 with two home runs and nine RBI in 23 games at Triple-A this season.
“He’s playing well; he’s swinging the bat,” Joe Girardi said. “We’ve gotten good reports.”
After a long history with New York (including being the piece the Yankees would not include for Cliff Lee and being released and signed earlier this offseason) Adams has finally made the show and has a chance at legitimate playing time.
He’s not a high enough prospect to be an instant addition, but he’s worth keeping an eye on in the event Kevin Youkilis takes longer than needed to return to the field.
Adams may stick around since he can also back up second and possibly even first base. Jayson Nix, Alberto Gonzalez and Eduardo Nunez cloud the left side of the infield situation in New York, but the Bronx Bombers have a lot of motivation to see what Adams can do first with respect to payroll cuts in 2014.
