In Sunday’s win over the Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Over eight games, he is hitting .516 with two homers, 11 RBIs and a 1.400 OPS. After spending most of the spring nursing a tender Achilles’ heel the 37-year-old Ortiz might consider skipping spring training every year. We say that in jest of course because we all know how much major-league baseball players need six weeks of spring training, right?
While many people were wondering if Big Papi could make it back and if he could how long he would last, Ortiz wasn’t one of them insisting that it was just a matter of time before he returned to his run producing ways.
“He’ll be able to hit until the day he dies,” third baseman Will Middlebrooks said. “That’s just the way he is. You’re either born with it or you’re not, and he was definitely born with it. He’s got something special, man.”
Ortiz revealed Sunday that he’s dealing with a divorce from his wife of nine years. Ortiz asked for privacy in dealing with the issue. “There are some situations in life that work out for a period of time and at some point they don’t work out anymore and you have to move on,” Ortiz went on to say. “I’m moving on. She’s moving on. Hopefully everybody respects that.”
Done deal.
