The Oakland Athletics placed left fielder Yoenis Cespedes on the DL with a strained muscle in his left hand. An MRI showed no damage structurally to the hand and no surgery will be needed. Cespedes is expecting to return after the minimum time on the disabled list. He was batting .200 with three home runs and seven RBIs playing in the first 11 games of the season.
Cespedes hit .292, 23 home runs and 82 RBI in 2012. The A’s recalled outfielder Michael Taylor from Triple-A Sacramento to fill Cespedes’ roster spot. Taylor was hitting .410 with three home runs, five doubles, 11 RBIs and six multi-hit performances in nine games with the River Cats.
Meanwhile Coco Crisp was held out of action after coming down with a groin injury suffered Friday MBAs 12 inning win over the Tigers.
