The Yankees were considered injury prone ever since Hiroki Kuroda, Ichiro Suzuki and Kevin Youkilis were signed. The concept was older age would contribute to higher injury risks and represented a major roadblock in winning the American League East for the Bronx Bombers.
The injuries are piling up, but it’s not from the expected players.
Here are updates on the past and present Yankees’ injuries in training camp:
Phil Hughes: Was out with a bulging disk and is now making tosses from the pitcher’s mound. Might still be ready Opening Day.
Mariano Rivera: Tore his ACL last May and last pitched in his first spring training game on Tuesday. Rivera should be the Opening Day closer.
Derek Jeter: Broke his ankle and required surgery in October. Has begun fielding drills and batting practice, but has yet to get into a game. March 10th seems to be the magic number here, but Jeter is still projected for Opening Day.
CC Sabathia: Left elbow surgery over the offseason has Sabathia in recovery mode. He is expected to be the Opening Day starter and is currently throwing bullpen sessions and preparing for his first spring start this week.
Current Injuries:
Michael Pineda: Tore his right anterior labral last March. Pineda has begun bullpen sessions and is expected to return early June.
Cesar Cabral: Suffered from a stress fracture last March and is basically on the same timeline as Pineda.
Curtis Granderson: Fractured his forearm. Granderson was hit by a pitch from J.A. Happ and is expected to be out until early May.
Alex Rodriguez: Another hip injury has A-Rod out until midseason. There is a possibility the former All-Star could miss all of 2013.
Mark Teixeira: The newest addition to the injury list. Teixeria has a strained tendon in his right wrist and will be out 8-10 weeks. Him and Granderson are both projected possibly back in early May.
