Record price paid for a sports related domain

Major League Baseball paid $1.2 million for the domain name Rockies.com in a deal that was brokered by Venture Capital Group according to Josh Leventhal of Baseball America.

The group announced last fall that the domain which had been previously used to promote the Rocky Mountains would be up for auction.

The name was expected to garner between $200,000 and $400,000.

In 2010 MLB purchased Angels.com for $200,000.

MLB now owns the rights to all but four team name domains.

The Giants, Rays, Rangers, and Twins domains are all privately owned, as is Baseball News Source.
