SAN FRANCISCO – Having the Chicago Cubs come to town is a cure for many ills. Ryan Vogelsong won his fourth straight decision and Buster Posey scored the go-ahead run on a double play ground ball in the seventh inning and the Giants beat the Cubs 3-2.
The Giants completed the club’s first sweep of the season. Vogelsong pitched seven strong innings allowing just two earned runs and striking out three. He walked none. the Cubs have now lost 16 of their last 19 games. With a trade deadline approaching, the Cubs may become very active sellers this summer on the trade market.
NEW YORK – St. Louis Cardinals Allen Craig homered in the eighth inning and drove in three runs to lead the Cardinals past the New York Mets 5-4. Lucas Duda and Scott Hairston homered for the Mets. Mets starter Dylan he struck out 8/7 innings allowing just two earned runs and wound up with a no decision. Jason Mott nailed down his ninth save of the season for the Cardinals.
PHILADELPHIA – Clayton Kershaw pitched seven strong innings for the Los Angeles Dodgers while giving up three runs and striking out five. He received a no decision for his efforts. For the Philadelphia Phillies Placido Polanco hit a tying, two-run homer to help the Phillies rally from a 3-0 deficit against Kershaw. The game marked the return of Vance Worley to the Phillies rotation, and he pitched four innings and gave up three earned runs. D Gordon tripled against Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon and Elian Herrera hit a tiebreaking RBI.
