Giancarlo Stanton was able to take care of business early. Stanton belted a Marlins-record 43rd homer on Monday night. He has now hit at least one home run in five straight games and helped his team to an 8-3 victory against the San Francisco Giants.
Home run No. 43 broke the record for the club of 42 home runs set in 1996 by Gary Sheffield. The new record was set after just 117 games of the regular season. Stanton now has 45 games to add to his record number of home runs for the team.
Following the game, Stanton said that when you close in on a record and are just one home run or hit from setting it, the last thing you want is for it to linger too long because it eventually makes each at-bat more and more difficult and pressure filled. He added that he was lucky to get that out of the way quickly.
Dee Gordon the Marlins starting second baseman said Stanton was on a tear and he called his teammate amazing.
Bruce Bochy the manager for the Giants said Stanton was on a streak that very few power hitters before him have had been on.
Stanton set yet another Marlins record for the most games in a row to hit a home run when he blasted a Ty Blach pitch during the first inning for a two-run homer.
Following the game, Blach said he thought he had made a decent pitch to Stanton, but Stanton was so strong he was able to muscle it out of the park.
Stanton hit a single later in the game to drive in another run helping Miami to its fourth consecutive win.
Marcell Ozuna also hit a home run, his 27th, on Monday for Miami. Gordon had three hits, scored two runs and drove one run in, in support of Adam Conley who moved his record to 5-5.
Don Mattingly the Marlins manager said that a number of good things happen when the kind of game is played that you like to see. He called Stanton incredible, but said the team knows Stanton cannot hit a home run every night and they need to score runs other ways as well.
