Nationals Home Run Display Ties MLB Record

On Thursday, the Washington Nationals display of home run power tied a record in Major League Baseball. The Nationals connected for five home runs in the same inning.

The home run barrage came during the bottom half of the third against Michael Blazek the Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher. The Nationals hit four straight home runs during the inning.

Max Scherzer walked to open the inning. Brian Goodwin the Nationals leadoff hitter then homered to right. That was followed by a home run from Wilmer Difo to right center.

Bryce Harper then came to the plate and hit a ball over the fence in left center for the third straight home run of the inning. Ryan Zimmerman the team’s cleanup hitter then hit a home run to left center to give the team four home runs in four batters.

Following a flyout by Daniel Murphy, Anthony Rendon hit a homer to left-center giving Washington five home runs during their half of the third inning.

Harper called it fun adding that the Washington lineup has players that can do special things and on any given day anything can happen.

Washington is now the sixth team to have hit five homers in the same inning. The last time it was done was in 2006 by the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Nationals’ four consecutive home runs tied an MLB record as well, that was accomplished the last by the Arizona Diamondbacks in August 2011.

Of the eight teams, that have hit four straight home runs, Washington is the first team to do in with its first, second, third and fourth hitters in the lineup.

Blazek, who started for the first time in his career after making 108 relief appearances, became the first pitcher to given up five home runs during the same inning.

Scherzer, who on Thursday turned 32, said following the game that he was pleased to be given such run support.

Washington hit eight home runs during its 15-2 rout of the Brewers, with both Zimmerman and Harper hitting two apiece. All the home runs were during the first four innings of the game. The eight home runs hit by Washington, tied its franchise record set by the Montreal Expos in 1978.

The record for home runs in the major leagues for one game is 10, while the mark in the National League is 9.
