David Price and Red Sox to Meet Following Rehab Start

The Boston Red Sox will meet with left-hander David Prices Thursday as they try to find out what the next step is for the southpaw in his rehab after he gave up six runs, of which three were earned, during his 3 2/3 innings of work for Pawtucket in Triple-A Wednesday night.

Red Sox manager John Farrell during an interview following Boston’s loss of 9-4 to Texas said a scout was pleased with what he saw out of Price physically on Wednesday, but Farrell did not know what was next for the veteran pitcher.

The Boston manager said he and his coaches had to sit with Price and talk about what was best for him first, what was best for the team and about moving forward.

Making a second start in his rehab from an injured elbow, Price threw 89 pitches versus Louisville prior to being taken out during the fourth inning with two outs.

Price retired each of the final four batters that he faced.

The complete line in the game for Price was six runs, three of which were earned, seven hits, four strikeouts and one base on balls.

Officials at Pawtucket said that Price left the stadium following the game without talking to anyone in the media.

Boston has said previously that the start on Wednesday would be the last one for Price before he rejoined the Red Sox.

In the first start he made during his rehab at Pawtucket, Price gave up five hits and three runs over only two innings of work while walking one and striking out four against the Buffalo Bisons.

He gave up one solo home run as well as a double that knocked in two runs during the second inning.

Price, who is 31, was 17-9 with an ERA of 3.99 last season with Boston and was the American League leader in starts with 35 and in innings pitched with 230, during his second season of a 7-year $217 million contract with Boston.

Price was signed by Boston following the 2015 season and remains one of their top three pitchers along with Rick Porcello and Chris Sale.

The Red Sox have had problems this season with consistency and are just 24-21 on the season. Boston sits in third place in the American League 3 ½ games behind the first place New York Yankees.
