Home Run Derby Participants Announced

The lineup for the T-Mobile Home Run Derby was announced Thursday. The eight players that make up the field make this derby high-powered with a set of strong sluggers that could light up the southern California sky in San Diego on Monday night at Petco Park.

Six of the eight participants in the derby will take part in the All-Star Game on Tuesday as well. The field also was given a boost from two wild card picks including Todd Frazier the defending home run derby champion and Giancarlo Stanton the slugger for the Miami Marlins.

Stanton enters this derby on a big roll. The Marlins slugger hit four home runs in four at bats on July 5 and 6, with the last one making him only the 39th player ever to hit four in four at bats. The fourth was also the 200th of his career in the majors.

Frazier won last season’s Derby held at the Great American Ball Park. He won the title as a hometown hero as he was a member of the Cincinnati Reds last season.

However, this season Frazier will defend his title wearing the uniform of the Chicago White Sox his new team.

Wil Myers is the local legend this season. The San Diego Padres star could win the Derby title in front of his fans at Petco Park. He is participating in his first ever Derby, as are Corey Seager a rookie for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Adam Duvall for the Cincinnati Reds.

The remaining players in the field are veterans like Robinson Cano the second baseman for the Seattle Mariners, the Derby champ in 2011. Then there is Carlos Gonzalez the Colorado Rockies outfielder and in the major league leader in long balls as of Thursday morning, Mark Trumbo of the Baltimore Orioles.

Cano will participate in his fourth Derby of his career. Frazier is competing in his third straight Derby after reaching the finals in 2014 while winning last season. Gonzalez, Stanton and Trumbo are each appearing for the second time in their careers.

The players will be seeded one to eight with No. 1 taking on No. 8. The four remaining after round one will faceoff for the semifinals, with the winners of each semifinal heading into the finals.

Odds makers have given Stanton an edge with Trumbo slightly behind.
