The Boston Red Sox gave every opportunity for veteran Grady Sizemore to stick with the team as a centerfirlder , but his time is Boston is now over. The Red Sox designated outfielder Sizemore for assignment late this afternoon. The team recalled third baseman Garin Cecchini from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace Sizemore on the roster.
After a hit April in which he hit .343 for the first 10 games, Sizemore, 31, is hitting .216/.288/.324 (69 OPS+) with 10 doubles, two triples, two homers, 15 RBI, 14 runs and five stolen bases on the season
“Grady Sizemore is about all the good things in this game,” Red Sox skipper John Farrell said. “This was a tough decision to part ways with a guy of his character.”
Cecchini had a hit in his major league debut with Boston earlier this month, and hit .263 with two home runs and 24 runs batted in 62 games for Triple-A Pawtucket this season.
Cecchini was 74th on Baseball America’s list of prospects heading into the season, a status that may not last given his production this year.
