The Baltimore Orioles have acquired outfielder/DH Michael Morse from the Seattle Mariners. In exchange, the Mariners will receive minor-league outfield prospect Morse had one of the worst seasons of his career and did not develop into the player the club hoped it was getting in that three-way trade that brought to Seattle from Washington.
Morse, age 31, is batting .226/.283/.410 with 13 homers in 76 games. Avery has batted .259/.340/.345 with three homers and 29 stolen bases for Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk. The former second-round pick from 2008 who played a handful of games with the Orioles last season.
The Orioles had claimed Morse off revocable waivers yesterday, giving the teams 48 hours to work out a deal. The Orioles had also made a waiver claim on Minnesota Twins outfielder Josh Willingham, but the teams couldn’t complete a deal.
The team also annouced that it signed a left-handed bat in Dan Johnson, signing the veteran first baseman to a minor-league deal after he opted out of a deal with the Yankees. Johnson has spent all season playing at Triple-A for the Yankees, hitting .253 with 21 homers and an .826 OPS in 133 games.
