In his first outing back since getting the starting nod at the 84th All-Star Game before his home crowd at Citi Field, New York Mets ace Matt Harvey turned in a dominant performance on Sunday afternoon against the Philadelphia Phillies, leading the Mets to a 5-0 shutout at home.
After surrendering eight runs over his last two starts, Harvey buckled down on Sunday, working seven shutout innings of three-hit ball, striking out 10 batters and walking none in the process (it would be the sixth time this season that Harvey registered double-digit strikeout totals).
The Mets jumped on Philadelphia ace Cliff Lee early, as David Wright and Marlon Byrd each slugged a solo home run in the first inning. Juan Lagares would add a three-run shot in the fourth, scoring Wright and Josh Satin and giving the Mets the 5-0 lead and eventual victory.
Lee gave up four homers in his last start and has now surrendered a homer in four straight starts (and five of his last six). Over his last two outings, Lee has seen his home run allowed total jump from nine to 16.
With the 5-0 victory, the Mets have now won seven of their last 10 games and currently sit 10 1/2 games back of the NL East division leading Atlanta Braves.
