2013 All-Star Game Rosters and Notable Snubs

MLB ScoresThe 2013 All-Star Game rosters were announced and the Detroit Tigers lead all teams with a total of six representatives. The Baltimore Orioles have four. O’s slugger Chris Davis tallied 8,272,243 votes, the most of any player. St Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina led the NL by being named on 6,883,258 ballots.

Mariano Rivera, who has already announced that he’ll retire at the end of the season, will be an All-Star for the 13th time. The starting pitchers won’t be announced until Monday, July 15, but early speculation has focused on Matt Harvey for the NL and Max Scherzer for the AL.

The NL Final Vote candidates are Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez of the Dodgers, Ian Desmond of the Nationals, Freddie Freeman of the Braves and Hunter Pence of the Giants. In the AL, fans can choose between Joaquin Benoit of the Tigers, Steve Delabar of the Blue Jays, David Robertson of the Yankees, Tanner Scheppers of the Rangers and Koji Uehara of the Red Sox.

As always there were deserving all-star caliber players left off each team, Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria and Washington Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg among them.

“This is not a simple thing, but I’m proud of it,” Tigers and American League manager Jim Leyland said. “We worked hard on it. We’re not going to be perfect. I put a lot of time and thought into it. I had a lot of help. It’s still not going to make everybody happy. There’s going to be guys who should be All-Stars who are left off. That happens every year.”

Evan Longoria HurtLongoria has played in 84 games this year and posted the AL’s sixth-best OPS at .908 and has 17 HR and 49 RBI.

Nast NewsStrasburg has made 16 starts and has pitched to an ERA of 2.24.  a stint on the disabled list may have hurt his chances.

donaldsonOakland A’s third baseman Josh Donaldson  like Longoria may have been the victim of  and numbers game with a glut of all-star caliber third baseman in the American League.

With Miguel Cabrera deservedly starting at third base Manny Machado  was chosen as the backup.

mooreMatt Moore who has 12 wins, second behind  in the Scherzer’ 13 wins in American League was left off the team. He’s in the top 10 in hits per nine innings and strikeouts per inning.
