Heading into the bottom of the ninth, the San Diego Padres and Miami Marlins were locked in a 2-2 tie, but not for long as Jeff Mathis blasted a walk-off grand slam to open up the game and the victory for Miami.
Mathis’ grand slam was the second of his career and the 3,000th home run in franchise history for the Miami Marlins.
The Marlins struck first on Sunday on a Derek Dietrich two-run double to deep left center, scoring Logan Morrison and Marcell Ozuna for the early 2-0 lead.
Both starters, San Diego’s Andrew Cashner and Miami’s Nate Eovaldi, were solid on the afternoon, each registering six innings; however, their efforts would result in no-decisions as the game would be settled in the ninth.
With one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Mathis took Tyson Ross deep for the game-ending slam, leading Miami to the 6-2 victory, their seventh in the past ten games.
