Freeman, Maholm Lead Braves Past Diamondbacks in 6-2 Win

Braves NewsThe Atlanta Braves completed a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon with a 6-2 victory at Turner Field.

Braves’ first baseman Freddie Freeman led the offensive charge with a three-run bomb to deep center in the third inning, scoring Andrelton Simmons and Justin Upton to give the Braves a 4-1 lead at the time.

Dan Uggla would add to that lead with a two-run homer in the fifth, extending the lead to 6-1 (Brian McCann started the offensive charge in the second with a solo shot to left center).

Arizona originally started the game off with an early first inning run, which came off of a Paul Goldschmidt double play ball that allowed A.J. Pollock to score. The Diamondbacks would add a second run in the sixth on another Goldschmidt double play grounder, scoring Pollock once again.

Paul Maholm turned in a solid performance, working six innings of two-run ball and grabbing his ninth victory of the season. Maholm is on pace to set a career-high in victories this season, after doing so last season with Atlanta and Pittsburgh, in which he registered 13 wins.

With the victory, the Braves completed the sweep of the Diamondbacks and have now won six of their last 10 games, maintaining 6 1/2 game lead in the NL East standings over the Washington Nationals.
