Tampa Bay Rays prospect Wil Myers will make his major league debut Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox after being called up late Sunday. Myers was pulled in the third inning of a AAA Durham game and he will wear number 9 according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. To make room on the roster, Ryan Roberts has been optioned to Class AAA Durham (N.C.).
Myers, 2012 Minor League Player of the Year, was hitting .283 with 14 home runs in Class AAA. Myers was acquired by the Rays from the Royals in an offseason deal that sent starters James Shields and Wade Davis to Kansas City. He has 57 RBI in 63 games.
According to Rays General Manager Andrew Friedman, the team had been deliberating whether or not to call up Myers and his recent hot streak accelerated the conversation. The team was also impressed by the way he improved defensively in his time at Durham. Freidman said “He’s going to fit right in and help us win games.”
Myers has struck out 71 times in 63 games and struggled early against right-handed pitching. 60 of the 71 strikeouts have come against right-handers, but 10 of his 14 home runs have also come against right-handed pitching. He is hitting .328 against left-handers and point to 69 against right-handers. Check out the shot he hit in Durham below.
