Tampa Bay Rays Send Jake Odorizzi Back to Minors

Rays NewsThe Tampa Bay Rays sent right-handed pitcher Jake Odorizzi  back to Triple-A Durham in hopes of bringing some reinforcements to the Rays bullpen. LHP Alex Torres, who was optioned exactly 10 days ago is a possibility.

The Rays bullpen has pitched 8 1/3 innings in the past two games and set up man Joel Peralta has appeared in a league-leading 28 games, including his fourth straight last night.

“We have to make sure that we’re covered in the bullpen so nobody gets hurt and we can disperse the work properly,” manager Joe Maddon said. “There’s been a lot of craziness among the bullpen, so we need to square that up.”

Odorizzi  made two starts in the place of the injured David Price  and expressed his disappointment at being sent back.

“I’m disappointed,” Odorizzi said. “Even if I had got the win (Monday), it wouldn’t really have mattered. It wasn’t a reflection of outings or anything. They just needed somebody, and I was the lucky guy.”

Tampa Bay will need a starter  On Saturday in Cleveland and right-hander Chris Archer  is a strong possibility to fill that role.
