Tampa Bay Rays ace David Price was placed on the disabled list after training the triceps in his pitching arm last night against the Boston Red Sox. It marks the first time the Price has been on the disabled list in his career.
An MRI last night revealed that there was no structural damage and the team doesn’t believe it’s a long-term situation for the reigning Cy Young winner to recover.
Price has largely struggled this season pitching to a 5.24 ERA in nine starts with a 1-4 record.
Left-hander Alex Torres was called up to take its place on the roster, likely temporarily to help out with the bullpen for the weekend. Torres has started seven games for Triple-A Durham this year and is 2-2 with a 2.39 ERA. He has 49 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings, and has been plagued with control issues throughout his career.
Tampa Bay Rays Fantasy News
Torres has earned this promotion with his performance in Durham this year and it’s somewhat surprising that he will only be used in the bullpen. Alternatively the Rays could call up either RHP Jake Odorizzi (3.83 ERA) or Chris Archer (3.97 ERA) on Monday to take Price’s spot in the rotation.
