Joel Hanrahan Saves Red Sox 20th Win – Andrew Bailey Has Sore Biceps

Hanrahan, Red Sox NewsJoel Hanrahan recorded his 100th career save after surrendering a lead -off single and the Boston Red Sox earned their 20th win of the season 3-1 over the Toronto Blue Jays. Andrew Bailey who has assumed the closer role in Hanrahan’s absence, (recently back from the disabled list,) was unavailable due to soreness his right biceps.

“He got on the mound a little bit before the game yesterday and felt the discomfort. It was still there today, so he was unavailable,” manager John Farrell said. Farrell told Hanrahan earlier this week that the team was sticking with Bailey as their closer.

“They want to be smart about it and take the extra time. Shouldn’t be more than a couple days,” Bailey said.

Ryan Dempster pitched six solid innings allowing one run and striking out four as the Red Sox used 10 walks in their3-1 win over the  Blue Jays.  Mike Carp, Stephen Drew and Jacoby Ellsbury  added all the runs for Dempster would need.  Brett Lawrie is a solo home run in the first inning to account for the Blue Jays only run. Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ allowed two runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings, his shortest start of the season,

“I think (Happ) just lost his release point,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. “He’s the type of pitcher where he pitches up in the zone and sometimes he loses that.”

Red Sox Notes:  Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino said he felt fine after taking batting practice and was available to pinch hit.  Franklin Morales  who is recovering from a sore back is scheduled to throw a bullpen session in Texas this weekend. Davis Ortiz  was given the day off.
