MLB Scores: Valdespin Slam Powers Mets, Cobb Shuts Down Yankees

MlB ScoresMatt Kemp hit his first homer of the year and drove in three runs as Los Angeles grabbed a 3-1 lead against Mets ace Matt Harvey. Los Angeles Took a 3-2  lead into the ninth inning and turn the game over to closer Brandon LeagueDavid Wright tied the game with a two-out single  and League recorded his first blown save of the year.

The game remained tied until Jordany Valdespin hit a grand slam in the 10th and the New York Mets walked off with a 7-3 victory over the Dodgers. Ted Lilly tossed five effective innings in his first start since shoulder surgery, giving the Dodgers’ injury-depleted rotation a boost.  Harvey struck out seven in six innings of work.

 National League Scores

St. Louis 4 Washington 2 St. Louis scored three runs in the first inning as the Cardinals beat the Nationals 4-2. Jaime Garcia allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings of work and struck out three.  Stephen Strasburg allowed three earned runs in seven innings striking out seven as his record fell to 1-4.

Cincinnati 1 Chicago 0  Mat Latos  and the Cincinnati bullpen shut out the Chicago Cubs 1-0. Latos  pitched seven innings allowing four hits and Jonathan Broxton and Aroldis Chapamn did the rest behind a sixth inning home run by Todd Frazier.

Colorado 6 Atlanta 5  the Rockies entered the ninth-inning down 5-3 and rallied to tie and then beat the Atlanta Braves 6-5  in 12 innings. Michael Cuddyer and Josh Rutledge homered for the Rockies, who ended a three-game skid behind one-hit pitching by the bullpen over the last six innings.  The Rockies rallied off Braves closer Craig Kimbrel.

Arizona 3 San Francisco 2 Pinch hitter Wil Nieves delivered a sacrifice fly in the 10th to lift Arizona to a 3-2 victory over San Francisco.

Pittsburgh 5 Philadelphia 3   The Pittsburgh Pirates rallied with four runs in the last three innings to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3. Roy Halladay pitched six innings of one-hit ball and Chase Utley and Ryan Howard hit upper-deck solo homers off Rodriguez, but Mike Adams (1-2) couldn’t protect an eighth-inning lead.

 San Diego 2  Milwaukee 1 Edison Volquez (1-3) allowed just five singles and struck out three, and Carlos Quentin hit his first home run as San Diego beat Milwaukee 2-1

 American League Scores

Tampa Bay 3 New York 0  Alex Cobb scattered three hits over 8 1/3 innings and Ben Zobrist  supplied all the offense Tampa Bay would need  with a two-out two RBI base hit in the fifth inning to beat the New York Yankees 3-0.  Sean Rodriguez added a solo home run in the sixth inning

Toronto 6 Baltimore 5  Jim Johnson walked Maicer Izturis with the bases loaded in the 11th inning, and the Blue Jays beat the Orioles 6-5  and avoid a three-game sweep by Baltimore. J.P Arencibia,  Edwin Encarnacion,  Jose Bautista, and Rajai Davis  hit home runs for the Blue Jays.

Chicago 3 Cleveland 2 – Alex Rios hit his sixth home run of the season to lead the White Sox past the Indians 3-2.  Addison Reed recorded his sixth save of the season.  Michael Brantley had two hits for the Indians.

Houston 10 Seattle 3 Chris CarterRonny Cedeno and Brandon Laird homered, and Lucas Harrell pitched seven innings as Houston  beat the Seattle Mariners and Joe Saunders 10-3

Boston 6 Oakland 5 Jon Lester won his fourth game of the year and David Ortiz and Stephen Drew  powered the Boston Red Sox past the Oakland A’s 6-5 .  Andrew Bailey recorded his fifth save of the season since taking over for an injured Joel Hanrahan. Lester won despite walking a season-high six and lasting just 5 2/3 innings.

Detroit 7  Kansas City 5 Jose Valverde  made a triumphant return to Detroit to record his first save of the season and the Detroit Tigers on to beat the Kansas City Royals 7-5.  Max Scherzer  recorded the win, allowing five runs in five innings, while Wade Davis sufferedthe loss, giving up seven runs — three earned — in 3 2/3 innings.

 Texas 11 Los Angeles 3 Yu Darvish struck out 11 batters over six scoreless innings and Lance Berkman drove in four runs in the Rangers’ 11-3 win over the Angels.  Nelson Cruz and Lance Berkman homered for the Rangers.
