The Detroit Tigers have placed reliever Octavio Dotel on the disabled list with elbow soreness and inflammation retroactive to April 20. In a corresponding move the Tigers recalled 22-year-old Bruce Rondon from AAA Toledo. Rondon was sent down after a disastrous spring and apparently has ironed out some of his command issues.
Rondon has yet to allow a run in 7 2/3 innings with Toledo and has struck out nine batters.Rondon a Top 100 prospect by Baseball America features a 100 mile an hour fastball and has pitched to a 2.43 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 1.96 K/BB ratio across parts of six minor-league seasons.
Former closer Jose Valverde continues to pitch for single-A Lakeland in an attempt to make it back to the major leagues. Valverde struck out the side in his lone inning of work in a 3-1 win over Clearwater on Monday.
