The Miami Marlins released veteran infielder Chone Figgins today. Figgins was signed to a minor league deal in early February in hopes that he could provide some infield that and perhaps contribute in the outfield.
Figgins was released from the Seattle Mariners organization in November. The Mariners still owe $8 million-$36 million four-year deal that was signed before the 2010 season. The Marlins now have 42 players remaining in camp according to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald.
Figgins may catch on with another team but those possibilities are limited this late in the spring. Figgins has a career slash line of .277/.349/.364. Lsst season Figgins hit .181/.262/.271 over 194 plate appearances.
Marlins News: the Marlins reassigned right-hander Mitch Talbot to minor-league camp. .Donovan Solano was held out of the lineup today due to back tightness. Jeff Mathis is expected to return to the team in the early part of May. Mathis is recovering from a broken collarbone.
