WBC News: Cuba Sends Chinese Tapei Home With 14-0 Win

WBC NewsChinese Taipei has been eliminated from the 2013 World Baseball Classic after Cuba issued a 14-0 beating in a game which ended in the seventh inning due to the mercy rule.

Frederich Cepeda, Yasmany Tomas, Jose Abreu and Alfredo Despaigne all homered for Cuba while Danny Betancourt, Norberto Gonzalez and Raciel Iglesias combined to hold Chinese Taipei to just three hits.

Cuba blew the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Tomas blasted a home run that doubled the Cubans’ lead, putting it up 6-0. Cuba had eight consecutive batters reach base in the sixth, with back-to-back home runs by Abreu and Despaigne completing the rally.

Chinese Taipei’s loss comes just one day after it fell 4-3 to Japan in 10 innings. Cuba, who lost their second-round opener to the Netherlands, is slated to play the loser of Sunday’s game between Japan and the Netherlands On Monday.
