Reid Brignac was designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays this week to clear room on the roster or Kyle Farnsworth and Kelly Johnson, and reportedly had drawn interest from the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres and the Minnesota Twins. Today the Colorado Rockies announced that they had acquired the former top-50 prospect in a trade with Tampa Bay for cash considerations and a player to be named later. The trade was first reported by Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times
Brignac spent most of the season at Triple-A, where he posted a .231/.323/.353 slash line. Brignac will be looking for a roster spot in the Rockies infield that includes starters Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Rutledge and reserves Jonathan Herrera and D.J. LeMahieu.
Tampa Bay now has traded both Elliott Johnson and Brignac after both players were designated for assignment.
