The San Francisco Giants have reached an agreement with reliever Sergio Romo on a two-year deal worth $9 million, and in the process avoided salary arbitration. The Giants have now settled all their potential arbitration cases this off-season. Romo had asked for $4.5 million in the Giants were offering $2.675 million. With the new deal, Romo will become a free agent after the 2014 season.
Romo went 4-2 with 14 saves and a 1.79 ERA last season. He was the team’s primary closer in the postseason, when he had one win, four saves and a 0.84 ERA in 10 appearances. Romo settled in as the Giants closer after former closer Brian Wilson underwent Tommy John surgery, and Santiago Casilla was demoted.
Romo is 20-9 with a 2.20 ERA in 276 games over five seasons with San Francisco. Romo is expected to open the season as the closer for the reigning world champions.
