Yesterday we learned the Arizona Diamondbacks reached an agreement with J.J. Putz on a one-year extension that will keep him with the Diamondbacks through the 2014 season. Putz pitched to a 2.82 ERA in 2012 with 32 saves. Putz previously signed a two-year deal worth $10 million following the 2010 season. Putz who will receive $7 million in 2014 has a career ERA of 3.04 with 183 saves, and has pitched for the the Seattle Mariners, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox, and the Diamondbacks.
Arizona general manager Kevin Towers was pleased with the announcement, “J.J. has provided much-needed leadership and stability for our bullpen the last two years. He has been an integral piece and helped set the foundation for our bullpen’s turnaround so we are excited to have him in place the next two seasons.” Towers may not be done as a team is looking into an extension for Aaron Hill.
According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic the Diamondbacks have had preliminary discussions about a contract extension for second baseman Aaron Hill. In his first full season with Arizona, Hill hit an impressive .320/.366/.522 with 26 home runs and 85 RBI.
Hill has made it clear he would like to stay in Arizona if an extension can be reached. “I would love that, but that’s out of my control,” Hill said. “If they want to talk, that would be great. It’s got to work on both ends, obviously. It’s a business, too. It would be great, they know I’m open for anything. I’m just going to play. They know me.” Hill is known for his work ethic. “Some guys, they’re just excited to come to the ballpark,” Arizona teammate John McDonald said of Hill. Hill was acquired from the Blue Jays in August 2011.
