New York Yankees: Derek Jeter Begins Workouts in Tampa

New York Yankees newsAccording to New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman, Derek Jeter has removed the  walking boot from his left ankle has begun to work out at the team’s minor league complex in Tampa Florida. Jeter fractured his left ankle in the ALCS against the Detroit Tigers. He was placed in a cast following a surgical procedure in October.

“He’s doing fine,” Cashman said. “All the boots are off. He’s allowed to walk around now in shoes and stuff, but he’s not doing any running. He’s at the complex and they have an underwater treadmill, so he’s doing some walking underwater.

Jeter has repeatedly stated that he intends to be ready for spring training and at 100%. The future Hall of Fame shortstop hit .316 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI for the Yankees in 2012. He led the major leagues with 216 hits.

Jeter will begin baseball activities sometime in mid-to-late January; hitting and fielding. On-field running should begin sometime later in his rehabilitation. CC Sabathia (left elbow surgery) and closer Mariano Rivera (right knee surgery) are also rehabbing expected to be ready this spring. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez is expected to go hip surgery sometime this month, and is projected to return to the Yankees lineup in mid-to-late summer.
