Red Sox Reach Agreement With Shane Victorino

Red Sox News

Victorino will play right field for the Red Sox

The  Red Sox added another piece towards reconstructing the Boston line-up today, reaching an agreement with free-agent outfielder Shane Victorino.

The Boston Globe reported that the Red Sox offered Victorino a three-year, $38 million. WEEI’s Alex Speier first confirmed the agreement had been reached.

Victorino, who just turned 32, is a nine-year veteran who hit .255 with 11 homers and 55 RBIs for the Phillies and Dodgers last season, returns to the East Coast.

The switch hitting Victorino will likely play right field for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox have now signed  Mike Napoli to play mostly first base, Jonny Gomes to play left field, and David Ross to help behind the plate.

The Red Sox have committed $34 million per season in the last month to, Napoli, Gomes, Ross, and Victorino, albeit not the kind of spending Red Sox fans have grown accustomed to in the past.

However, the Red Sox appear to be content with using free agency as a tool to upgrade the roster without locking themselves into significant long-term commitments in salary.

Jacoby Ellsbury will play center field, and the Red Sox outfield now appears set. The Red Sox are still looking for starting pitching.

The Red Sox were reportedly interested in Josh Hamilton, Nick Swisher and Cody Ross, but its likely that interest will subside.
