Jeter fractured his left ankle in the 12th inning

Losing game one of the ALCS took on even more significance after the game when it was reported that shortstop Derek Jeter had fractured his left ankle during the 12th inning of game one.

While diving for a grounder in the 12th inning by Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta,  Jeter  fractured his left ankle and will be lost to the Yankees for the remainder of the playoffs. “His ankle fractured,” manager Joe Girardi said after the game. “It’s a three month recovery,” Girardi said. “It won’t jeopardize his career.”

Jeter was replaced in the field by Jayson Nix. The Yankees will likely replace Jeter with  Eduardo Nunez, who was dropped from the ALCS roster to make room for relief pitcher Cody Eppley.  The Yankees eventually lost 6-4 in 12 innings
