Carpenter dominant against Nationals to take control of NLDS

Chris Carpenter pitched 5 2/3 innings of shutout baseball and the Cardinals pounded Washington Nationals pitching for 14 hits and eight runs to win game three of the National League Division Series 8-0.

Trevor Rosenthal, Fernando Salas and Joe Kelly pitched the final 3 1/3 innings to complete the shutout for the Cardinals. Matt Holliday had three hits and two RBI, and shortstop Pete Kozma hit a three-run homer in the second inning for St. Louis.

Washington starter Edwin Jackson was knocked around for four runs in five innings of work on eight hits. Offensively, Ian Desmond had three hits and Ryan Zimmerman two hits for the Nats. Washington had seven hits total. Game four of the NLDS will be played Thursday afternoon with Kyle Lohse starting for St. Louis and Ross Detwiler for Washington.
