Hunter led off the seventh with his 15th homer, driving a 2-0 pitch to right-center for the first home run allowed by Anderson in 27 innings this season.
Weaver wins 17th game after missing start
Jered Weaver missed his last start with biceps tendinitis and returned to tossed seven shutout innings against the red-hot Oakland Athletics. Weaver struck out nine, allowed two hits and walked one batter. He needed just 94 pitches to complete the seven innings.
“There was no discomfort at all. I felt free and easy,” Weaver said after his 94-pitch effort. “It’s usually the (middle of the game) where it starts tightening up, and it’s tough to go back out there and warm up again. But I didn’t have that issue today. It’s definitely comforting, knowing that you came out of the game throwing close to a hundred pitches and still feel good.”
Meanwhile, Brett Anderson allowed five earned runs in 6 2/3 innings of work while striking out five and walking one for Oakland. Anderson was making his fifth start since returning from Tommy John surgery on July 14 and suffered his first loss of the season. The Angels scored all six runs in the seventh inning, led by Torii Hunter who had three RBI in the inning including his 15th home run of the season. Alberto Callaspo had two hits and two RBI for the Angels .
“Obviously, you knew it was going to be a tough day, going up against one of the best pitchers in baseball. But you want to go out there and prove yourself and try to match him pitch for pitch,” Anderson said after his ERA rose from 0.69 to 1.93.
A’s rookie LF Yoenis Cespedes left the game midway through the fifth inning because of a sprained right wrist.
