According to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, rookie third baseman Will Middlebrooks suffered a broken wrist after being hit by pitch in the ninth-inning of the Red Sox game with Cleveland. Middlebrooks, 23, is batting .281/.325/.509 with 15 home runs, 54 RBI and an .835 OPS this season in 75 games played for the Red Sox.
Middlebrooks will become the 25th Boston Red Sox player this season to be added to the DL. Danny Valencia whom the Red Sox acquired from the Minnesota Twins in a trade a week ago will be called up from Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday. Valencia brings with him a .260/.301/.393 batting line and should see significant playing time at third base.
Middlebrooks was in the middle of a remarkable debut season for the Red Sox, despite being a media focal point earlier in the season surrounding the Kevin Youkilis controversy.
