CINCINNATI – Mat Latos did a little bit of everything tonight as the Cincinnati Reds downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 in the first game of a pivotable series for the National League Central’s first and second place team.
When the game began, the Pirates were 3 1/2 games back of the Reds, Latos pitched shutout baseball into the eighth inning and hit a two-run homer off of Pirates starter Wandy Rodriguez. the win moved the Reds to 24 games over 500 and the team is now 15 – 3 since losing All-Star first baseman Joey Votto.
Aroldis Chapman closed out the win with his 24th save of the season.
Chris Heisey had an inside the park home run in the second inning, his fourth home run of the season.
