The New York Yankees did want some help at third base after all. The Yankees traded reliever Chad Qualls, whom they acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies after being designated for assignment in early July, for Casey McGehee.
First baseman Mark Teixeira injuring his wrist may have had something to do with the acquisition for the Yankees as well.
Acquiring first baseman Gaby Sanchez from the Marlins earlier in the day made McGehee more expendable.
Qualls, 33, has a 4.89 ERA and McGehee is batting .230/.297/.377 the season.
If you are keeping score on the Pirates, the team traded for Gaby Sanchez, Travis Snider, Wandy Rodriguez and McGehee in the last week.
