Boston Red Sox Dustin Pedroia is returning from the disabled list and Mauro Gomez will be sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday to clear roster space.
Pedroia spent the minimum 15 days on the DL with a thumb injury.
Pedroia is expected to be in the lineup tonight in the game against the Chicago White Sox. the Red Sox decided tp keep both Pedro Ciriaco and Nick Punto as utilitymen.
Ortiz was the 22nd player to spend time on the disabled list for the Red Sox this year.
Ciriaco was very good while Pedoria was recovering from his thumb injury, hitting .400 with three steals and six RBIs in nine games.
