SAN FRANCISCO – Madison Bumgarner pitched a one-hitter, only allowing a 6th inning single to Ryan Hanigan and the San Francisco Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-0. It was the fourth consecutive shutout victory for the Giants pitching staff. Bumgarner (10-4) struck out eight and walked two and the Giants moved into first place in the National League West, alone, for the first time this year.
The Giants became the 17th team to have four or more consecutive shutouts since 1918. The Baltimore Orioles did it most recently, with five straight in 1995.
The Giants pitching staff now has a league-leading 10 shutouts on the season. Giants pitchers have now set a San Francisco record of 36 consecutive innings without a run.
“I’ve seen a lot of things in this game but I’ve never seen that before,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “It’s been an impressive run. That’s hard to do.” The Giants will look to extend their streak to five tonight when Matt Cain, he of the perfect game fame, takes the mound against the Reds.
