NEW YORK – Johan Santana tossed the first no-hitter in New York Mets history and beat the St Louis Cardimals 8-0. He threw 134 pitches, 77 for strikes , walked 5 and struck out 7. The Mets pounded eight hits for eight runs to support the effort by Santana. Lucas Duda homered and drove in four runs for the Mets.
Since 1962 the Mets have not had a pitcher throw a no-hitter. Seven no-hitters have been thrown by pitchers before they became Mets, and 10 no-hitters have been thrown by pitchers after they left the organization. Tonight’s gem, like many no-hitters wasn’t without a close call or a great catch. Carlos Beltran, back at Citi Field for the first time since the Mets traded him last July, hit a line drive over third base in the sixth inning that hit the foul line and should have been called fair.
But third base umpire Adrian Johnson ruled it foul and the no-hitter was intact. Mike Baxter made a tremendous catch in left field to rob Yadier Molina of extra bases in the seventh, getting injured in the process.
PHILADELPHIA – Hunter Pence, Placido Polanco, and Carlos Ruiz all had three hits and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 6-4. Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 15th save in 15 chances to close out the victory. The Marlins got the game close in the eighth-inning when Logan Morrison and Justin Ruggiano homered off Phillies reliever Antonio Bastardo. that’s when Papelbon came on to record the last five outs.
MILWAUKEE – the Pittsburgh Pirates ripped Milwaukee Brewers starter Randy Wolf for six runs in the third inning and went on to beat the Brewers 8-2 . the bigger news for the Brewers was that MVP Ryan Braun left the game with a right hip strain. He would be considered day-to-day for now. The Pirates had 13 hits and used six pitchers to get the victory.
SAN FRANCISCO – Melky Cabrera had a San Francisco Giants franchise record of 51 hits in the month of May. As it turns out turning the page on the calendar didn’t seem to affect him one bit. Cabrera had two hits to help the Giants hold off the Chicago Cubs 4-3. Cabrera is now hitting .376. “That month is over,” Cabrera said of his franchise record-tying performance in May. “I never think about what day it is or anything like that. I just try to do my best to help the team and I’m happy I’m doing that right now.” Giants Madison Bumgarner allowed two earned runs as he pitched into the ninth-inning. He struck out 11. The Cubs scored three runs in the ninth and made a game of it on Alfonso Soriano‘s three-run home run. Javier Lopez came on to get the two final outs in the ninth and seal the win for the Giants.
DENVER – Going into Friday night’s game with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Colorado Rockies had scored 40 runs in their last four games in a four-game sweep over the Houston Astros. make that 53 runs in their last five games. The Rockies the Los Angeles Dodgers 13-3 on Friday night. The Rockies have now won five games in a row in the Dodgers have lost five games in a row. Carlos Gonzalez continued his torrid hitting pace with two more hits and an RBI. Gonzalez has hit .625 with six homers and 11 RBIs over the last six games. The Rockies pounded out 15 more hits against three Dodger pitchers.
SAN DIEGO – The offensively challenged San Diego Padres scored six runs in the eighth inning to power their way to a 7-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night. Led by Jesus Guzman the Padres strung together six hits in the eighth to stun the Diamondbacks. The Padres are now 18-35 on the season. The two teams will resume their series on Saturday.
